Chloe Dao on Episode 2 of Project Runway, Season Six

Following up the initial Project Runway recap by Jay McCarroll, winner of season 1, this week's episode recap on Marie Claire comes from the winner of season 2, the adorably chic Chloe Dao. Its a great recap. In some ways, maybe Jay's was funnier, but Chloe brought her own pizazz to this as well, its definitely worth reading and it will entertain and capture what you were thinking when watching the show. Because honestly, why is Mitchell still there? Related to the producer? Or do they realize this could be the designer who could create some needed manufactured drama for this so far more lackluster season and become the designer everyone hates for sticking around while showing minimal talent at best?

Jay McCarroll on Episode One of Project Runway, Season Six

How fantastic! My favorite Project Runway winner, Jay McCarroll, wrote a recap of the Project Runway premiere this season. He did it for Marie Claire. It appears that other winners and finalists will be writing recaps throughout the season. I'll be posting links to the recaps weekly. This one has Jay's usual colorful commentary that made us love him and that is totally Jay. Take a read. Let's hope he is one who writes the majority of the recaps, they will probably be the funniest ones.

Top Chef Masters: Confused by the Winner, But Still Great

It was sort of easy to tell by the edited judges table who would be the winner. Michael and Hubert had their positive critiques first and their negative critiques second, and Rick's was the reverse, that's almost always a giveaway on here. Leave you feeling positive about the winner and all. Yeah. I've been watching since the first season, you pick up a few tells that way.:)

But I was left wondering why didn't Michael win. Not because I like Michael (I do!) but because his non spectacular dish (which was not deemed to be good not great) wasn't criticized as harshly as Rick's non spectacular dish (which was heavily criticized) and Michael had excellent other dishes as Rick did. I guess mole trumps short ribs, but not sure. But coming off of the table where everyone ate, it seemed like Michael was the more likely winner. And by the end, I still wasn't sure why Rick would get it except that they were so wowed by the mole sauce. I wonder if they were tied and had to pick who won it all and edit accordingly? Just wondering. Cause like the real tool critic, the one from Saveur, he basically switched up his comments at the final judging table. His insulting 3.5 stars was woefully out of place as well. He had a problem with the polenta? Really? When was that? He said the fish interpretation wasn't complex enough, nothing about the polenta. It was odd is all. No big deal that Rick won, but they probably should have edited a bit more closely to show why Rick truly edged out Michael and Hubert. Because from what they showed, they loved Rick's other dishes but he really missed on his future dish with the different pieces of the seafood and the air thing. So, yeah, a little confused, but happy for all three to making it this far and having such a nice showing at the finale.

And since the regular season of Top Chef has begun, let me add, I don't know why Padma is a judge. A host sure, but a judge, no. I wonder this every season. And she showed in this Top Chef Masters finale one of the reasons why I tend to question her actually offering her opinion and its just one of many times I've heard her say something when I wished she would just have remained silent or at the very least consider what she was saying. Mexican food doesn't always get the street cred? Really Padma? Since what you are trying to say was Mexican food is overlooked in the world of fine dining and sophistication, "street cred" would be the last thing you would say. But I digress.

Congrats to Rick Bayless on his Top Chef Masters win. The episode may not have shown totally why you won, but you showed throughout the last several weeks that you were deserving of the title. So, Congrats!!!

Project Runway All Star Challenge: The Fix Is In

Hugh Jackman Hosts Move For Aids US Launch And Exhibition

This shit is ridiculous. Ridiculous! It was fixed. Clearly. These judges love Daniel Vosovic. Love him. If you didn't watch that season and maybe you thought the judges loved Christian Siriano in his season. That love is nothing compared to how they love Daniel V. They expected him to win his season, he was winning challenges left and right, he was supposed to win. And then he showed up at Fashion Week with a boring beige line that they just couldn't reward. And I guess that's how this "All Star Challenge" that wasn't a challenge since the winner was predetermined, came about. A fix to give Daniel Vosovic $100,000 and he can now have the title of being the winner of a Project Runway. But he gave yet another lackluster collection. I'm ashamed of Nina Garcia, Heidi Klum, and Michael Kors. They compromised the integrity of the show to give their golden boy a title and some money to help with his line's launch in 2010 (yes, its already scheduled, and did I mention he wrote a book with Tim Gunn? Yeah, he did).

Daniel V clearly didn't deserve to be in the Top 4 let alone win the thing. Who are the judges kidding?!?! Korto or Uli should have won. Since Korto was in the Top 4, there's no way she should have lost. She was robbed. And so was Uli. Her designs weren't in the top 4? Give me a break. This shit was fixed something serious. I cannot believe I wasted 2 hours watching a fixed competition. I'm disappointed. I expect better of them and this certainly doesn't get me wanting to reinvest in another season with them so willing to compromise their integrity.

Tim Gunn is Back! Project Runway Premieres Tonight

The Naked Cowboy helps Project Runway models promote on a bus in Times Square, NYC

Project Runway is back! I am excited that its back. I'm not someone who was mad about Bravo developing a rival show, nor did I think Fashion Show was that bad. Here's the thing. Project Runway wants me to take their side in this? Or more accurately, their production company and Lifetime? Please! That's like saying it was okay for the Baltimore Colts to sneak off in the middle of the night and relocate the team to Indianapolis. I'm not going to praise sneaking away and being greedy. Not gonna happen. Are you telling me ABC wouldn't be supremely pissed that NBC stole away Grey's Anatomy? That's what this is. So, I don't blame Bravo. And for anyone who is thinking, who are the Colts? Broaden your horizons a bit, that's football!

But here we are, Project Runway starts its run on Lifetime. And I'll admit, I'm concerned. Let's run down why, shall we.

1. Commercials.

Is it just me or does this season seem extremely lackluster going by the previews? I hope I'm wrong, but I haven't seen one preview that contains smack talk, a hint of a fight or argument, just basically no drama. And I'm like, huh? And I feel like something should make it into the previews to sort of get people excited for the normal drama that unfolds during Project Runway.

2. Move to LA. and Too Many Celebrities.

There look to be more Hollywood guest judges than ever. Which may be because most notable designers aren't based in LA. UGH! I do not want this show to go more Hollywood. I do think the reputation would suffer for that (last season's increase was criticized as well). The designers are the best guest judges. Its a mistake to move this show away from the mecca of the fashion world and the location of Fashion Week.

Thus far I've see Lindsey Lohan, Christina Applegate, and Nicole Kidman all making appearances this season and I doubt the list ends there. Too Hollywood! This isn't exactly Sarah Jessica Parker presenting a challenge for the designers to design something within a tight budget for her line offered at Target.

4. Lifetime=Changing Demographic

I think its a problem to fit PR into the Lifetime mold and not have Lifetime roll with the punches where PR is concerned. You already have a contingent who are banning the move to Lifetime. So, I think it would be a problem to just diminish the dramatic side. The producers are the same. But the network is different and they approve and edit what goes on as well. And Lifetime doesn't have a show airing at midnight showing swimmer's asses, cursing, and drinking on TV (Watch What Happens).

I am skeptical that Lifetime can create the same online community that Bravo did, and the commercials with everyone yelling and the Lifetime website don't make me think differently about that. Having said all that, I hope its the PR I know and love, but man do those previews leave me wondering if this is going to be an off season.

And along with that, Lifetime features a completely different demographic than Bravo. And plain and simple, Lifetime is not the network of young trendsetters. I hope that the show is not tamed down to work better with Army Wives and Disease of the Week movies. But I fear it may be and it won't be the same appealing show we know and love.

So, we'll see. I do see it as a problem that there is no drama in the commercials. And I'm not talking knock down drag out fights. That's not something that happens on PR. I haven't heard one catty comment, which for PR is what drama is (you know of the "that's a hot tranny mess "variety). Words are the weapon, commentary is what contributes to the drama and there's been none in the commercials.

I'm skeptical, but I'm hoping when I tune in tonight, its going to be the same Project Runway I know and love. But first, don't forget to watch the All Star Project Runway that airs before the season premiere. Its got several favorite designers returning (Daniel V, Mychael, Korto, Chris) and a heinous one as well (I'm talking to you, Jeffrey!).

Gossip Girl. Well, It's Actually Good, But...

The CW Network 2009 Upfront - Presentation

From the Archives:
So, this was from November 2007, a little after Gossip Girl first premiered. I love this post, not sure why I didn't get around to publishing it, except I'm sure I was editing it and forgot. I still watch Gossip Girl now.
Its one that I try not to miss, but the first season was far superior to the second, so I'm hoping the third season will hold my interest. Interesting how things started out, because now Chuck has become one of the best characters on the show and you barely remember his earlier mistake with Jenny unless its mentioned, Blair has damn near become the lead over Serena, Dan and Serena have been just so-so in the second season, and Jenny was in a tailspin much of the season. We'll have to see what this new season brings, it ought to be interesting with college starting.

Wasn't this pitched several years ago to the WB as Manchester Prep (which was picked up and despite shooting episodes, never made it to the air? Because all though I am actually enjoying Gossip Girl (against my better judgment since I'm holding firm to my indignation with The CW for canceling Veronica Mars), one of the reasons I am enjoying it may be because I recognize it as the TV version of Cruel Intentions. There's no two ways about it, this is very similar. And before someone says that Gossip Girl is based on the books of the same title, I'll just point out that Cruel Intentions pre-dates the book series as well.

Some things are a bit changed, but this is Cruel Intentions, i.e. Manchester Prep. Chuck (Ed Westwick) has completely ripped off the Sebastian character completely, though he's much smarmier and doesn't have the charm of the Sebastian character that made him the likable bad boy (nor does the actor come close to being remotely as gorgeous as Ryan Phillipe). Dan's little sister Jenny (Taylor Momsen) is obviously similar to Selma Blair's naive Cecile character and Blair (Leighton Meester) is quite obviously doing her best to pull off the evil bitchiness of Sarah Michelle Gellar's Kathryn's character, but she's really not reaching that level just yet, which could be a good thing, Kathryn was a trip.

That being said. I am definitely on the Gossip Girl bandwagon. I do have a few problems with the show. (Note: I haven't watched the new episode this week - remember, I am still protesting the CW, so I watch the repeats that air on Sunday).

So, here is the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly thus far. We'll do this in reverse, in an effort to be (or at least appear) more positive.

The Ugly - I don't care what inner circle you are trying to join, even in high school, the morning after you have just escaped being raped, you are not rosy as can be and ready to continue your plan to infiltrate the popular people clique. No matter how much you want to play something off, I'm sorry, your target audience is teenage girls so I would have liked not to have seen the girl who was almost raped not be remotely affected by what happened just 12 hours later. Her brother is much more concerned than she is, and thank goodness for that, or the viewers may forget what the heck happened.

The Bad - Acting is only a strength with some actors/characters. Chuck, for instance, certainly seems to be forcing his bad boy mystique with the gravelly voice and the always shocking comments. He only appears remotely likable when he's with Nate, and even then it's a stretch. His scarf is also killing me. Ed Westwick, whose other acting credits I am unfamiliar with, may be a good actor, but right now, a lot of what he does seems forced and doesn't come naturally. Hopefully this will change over time. I also wouldn't mind him not being completely repulsive, so possibly lay off the rape attempts. Just a suggestion.

What's with the "Yes" girls? The friends of Blair and Serena, who currently appear to be just friends of Blair, are completely pointless. They damn near look like her slaves, the way they hang on Blair's every word, have no opinions of their own, and cater to her in any way possible. I would much prefer having another quality male and female supporting characters on the cast who actually contribute to the show. These girls are just window dressing thus far.

Why is Nate friends with Chuck? I'm thinking they've been friends since pre-school, the friendship has just continued, and Nate's father encouraged the friendship, but we haven't been told that as of yet, and some sort of background is needed. Besides Nate's indiscretion with Serena, he is in no way sleazy or smarmy like Chuck is, in fact, he's very likable and endearing, so it would be nice to know why nice guy Nate is friend's with attempted rapist Chuck.

What is with the previews of the night's episode right before the episode begins? I don't care if it's just pictures, I'm about to watch the damn show, I don't need it ruined seconds before so there is no surprise within the hour. I mean, about 99% of the entire show is activity done for shock value alone, so why would you spoil that? Makes no sense whatsoever and they need to cut that pronto.

The Good - Yes, there is a Good (there has to be since despite the bad, I do like the show).

Blake Lively - Let's be for real. Of the four actresses who starred in Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, the weakest, by far, was Blake Lively. I am happy to see she has clearly been honing her skills
Penn Badgley - Whereas Blake was the weakest but still was good in Sisterhood, Penn just plain couldn't act the first time I encountered him on the short-lived WB show The Mountain starring Oliver Hudson and Anson Mount.
Chace Crawford - The actor who plays Nate. He is GORGEOUS. I'm talking model beautiful. Getting a look at him is more than reason enough to tune into Gossip Girl. I'm not exaggerating.

Relationships - Several good relationships have shown to be the great strengths of the show. The ones that stand out the most to me: brother and sister Dan and Jenny; their father Rufus has a great relationship with them that seems to ground them; friendship between Dan and Vanessa; the friendship between Blair and Serena. So, great relationships on the show, seem to definitely be a positive for this show thus far.

I'm looking forward to what the rest of the season will bring. I'm an O.C. junkie, so I'm glad Josh Schwartz is back with some great teen angst to watch.

ABC's Big Shots: Like Desperate Housewives With Men

From the Archives: I sure did fall in love with this show. I hope it gets a DVD release. It was just so much fun. Looked forward to it every week. ABC has become the number one offender in ripping away series I love. We have a serious love/hate relationship.

Now, don't get me wrong, Big Shots certainly isn't up to the quality of Desperate Housewives (in their first season) but the rest is essentially true. Instead of card games around the table at Bree or Lynette house, it's golf at the swanky country club. They talk about their wives, mistressess and jobs. In fact, the biggest difference between the Housewives and these men, is that aside from being men and therefore certainly appearing a bit whiny at times, the men are all high powered execs of some sort, so the scenes at home aren't nearly as common as the scenes at the office or country club.

The real strengths of the show lie in Dylan McDermott and Michael Vartan's characters. Michael has been the dramatic strength and Dylan has been very good at being light-hearted drama. Joshua Malina and Christopher Titus are there to give us a few laughs, and they basically carry this off. Definitely worth checking out. Will this win an Emmy? Not anytime soon. But its a lot of fun, and there's some really good acting from these four and several of the supporting cast including Paige Turco, Nia Long, and Peyton List.

ER

Blast from the Past: This is from November 2007 as well. I get mad just thinking about the possibility of Luka and Abby together.

I don't watch ER anymore, but I used to watch it every Thursday without fail and wouldn't take phone calls during that hour. It was the be all and end all for me and I stuck with it into for awhile, even after most of the major players left. Anyway, I can't tell you how upset I get everytime I see the commercials with Abby and Luka with them getting married and now some sort of reunion.

For those of you who have watched as long as I have, I have never forgiven Luka for how he treated Abby towards the end of the first time they dated. Remember when he was paying too much attention and spending time with Nicole (Julie Delpy). He treated Abby so bad and made her feel like nothing and I will never forget when he told her "you're just not that special." Luka's sexiness vanished in that moment. I've been through with him ever since. He doesn't deserve Abby. Getting mad just writing this. I wrote him off that day and haven't looked back. Jackass. And you know what, I've mentioned this to more than one person and as long as they watched ER, they know exactly the scene I'm talking about and have the same issue. It was just so beyond wrong, so beyond cruel.

Not Really Enjoying Ryan's New Role on The Office

From the Archive: Funny, they must have asked around and realized Ryan as the temp was the best place for him, cause that's what it seems like the game plan is going into this new fall season.

Maybe (hopefully) this will change in the near future, but I am just not enjoying Ryan as the new Jan. I miss him being at the Scranton branch more often in his old capacity - acting superior to everyone working there, yet not making one sale in his entire time there. Always with a sour disposition and having disdain for Jim and disliking Kelly but wanting to sleep with her anyway. Being Michael's errand boy (remember when he sent Ryan to Popeye's that was like an hour away to get his breakfast, I miss that humiliation). Ryan is entirely too much to take with his new ego.

Reaper Madness - The CW's Reaper With Bret Harrison

2007 Summer TCA Tour - Day 11

From the Archives:
From Late September 2007. Yes I realize my archive posts are out of order, but since they are all out of order, no big deal, right? So, Reaper. What a great show. A damn shame CW didn't realize what a gem it had here. It got better ratings than Gossip Girl. Sure did. But I guess CW assumes buzz is money and ratings can be ignored. We'll see how far that gets them, I think a combo of both would work and Reaper should have stayed but and could have grown if CW bothered marketing it. I was right about it being a great vehicle for Bret Harrison and there was no better casting than Ray Wise as the Devil, he sure did relish this role. And the actor who played Sock is Tyler Labine. A true find. Look for him in the new FOX series Sons of Tuscon.

This show is definitely a keeper. I've always enjoyed Bret Harrison, this is definitely the vehicle for him. And loving that Sock character. Keep your eye on that actor. Seriously talented. Ray Wise is pitch perfect, by season's end I think he'll be deserving of an Emmy nomination, if anyone from The CW could garner one, it would be him.

Some gems from the opening scene that let me know its worth watching:

It's Sam's 21st birthday.

Dad: "Kyle, did you wish your brother a happy birthday?"
Kyle: "The guy's 21, lives with his parents, and wears an apron for a living. There's no happy in that birthday."

When Sam reveals that a rejection letter arrived from Stanford for his brother Kyle, and his dad asks Kyle how that is possible, we get this exchange:

Kyle: "Sam didn't even go to college."
Mom: "Yes, he did Kyle."
Kyle: "For a month!"
Mom: "And we're very proud of him for trying, it's just that college made him sleepy."

The CW's Gossip Girl & ABC Family's Beautiful People

From the Archives: Technically, think this one was originally composed after my other Gossip Girl post, but you get the point. From October 2007.

Did anyone watch the ABC Family show Beautiful People? I'm starting to sense a pattern, lack of originality. It's hard to be original nowadays, but I certainly can't say I like there being so little originality in this one show. Beautiful People was similar to Gossip Girl in that it was set mainly at a privileged New York prep school with the ridiculously wealthy and a girl from the not so wealthy side of the tracks begins school there. One of the show's main storyline was that the "poor" girl's mom (played by Daphne Zuniga) used to be in love with her daughter's new boyfriend's dad. Sound familiar? Yeah, thought so.

This Enchanted Movie

Walt Disney Pictures Presents A Screening Of Enchanted - Arrivals

From the Archives:
Including this one from November 2007 to show I can admit to being wrong! I saw this movie (on cable) recently and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It completely charmed me. Now, I'm not saying I don't stand by my initial impressions from the commercials, but glad I was wrong about this one and gave it a shot. Definitely not a miss. Very cute movie with Amy Adams, Patrick Dempsey, James Marsden, and Idina Menzel.

Am I the only one who thinks the commercials for Enchanted are just plain strange and odd? I mean, this just does not look good. I mean, I could see it being good as a spoof or a clever comedy geared toward adults but it appears to be child friendly with the PG rating, so I don't know what they are going for here. Not to mention it is a Disney movie. I guess it could be a hit or miss because you sure can't tell what the heck the movie is supposed to be about from the commercials, but I think it is more of a miss.

NUMB3RS: Stepping Up Their Game in a Big Way

From the Archives: This is from November 2007. And it still stands today, Numb3rs just came to the plate with a better show in Spring 2007 and they haven't dropped the ball since. Check it out, its probably a lot better, more compelling than you'd expect. Its good stuff.

Better than ever. Seriously do you watch this show? My guess is no. Or like me, there was a time maybe you wouldn't necessarily broadcast that you did watch. My immense love of Sports Night was the first thing that brought me to this show since Sabrina Lloyd (Natalie on Sports Night) was part of the original cast plus I've always liked David Krumholtz. And I found that I enjoyed this show, a little different take on the normal procedural, a different feel. I love that. Regular procedurals get old, fast and doing it the regular way, there's nothing like a good ole Law & Order marathon on TNT to cure that to see how it can be done right. So, I liked Numb3rs. Have watched it since it started even when Sabrina Lloyd left, I stuck around. I was enjoying it and the dynamic. Kind of nice to watch a show that's about the work, the family relationships, the friendships, and not all about creating unnecessary drama in the relationships just because. Even though I watched regularly, I didn't die if I missed an episode or anything. My love for the show wasn't that great. And then, they had this Colby (Dylan Bruno) storyline, where he was a double agent essentially. And BAM! Did Numb3rs step up their game big time! Its like Tony and Ridley Scott (their company produces the show) sat down with everyone on the show and said, we are going to make the storylines more complex, the action more intense, the overall show just much better. Because that's exactly what happened and I mean in a big way. It started with the season finale last season and since its return, hasn't let up. The action scenes are noticeably better executed (not at all far off from one of the Scott's brother's movies), the storylines more complex, I can't pick out the killer right off the bat. Its great. So, keep up the work Numb3rs! I liked the show before, but I'm not ashamed to admit I'm actually loving it now.

Tell Me You Love Me? Not Sure If I Can

Gersh Agency Pre-Emmy Party With Frederic Fekkai

From the Archives:
November 2007. Well this one only lasted one season. And I did watch the entire season. But never got excited. It was like a train wreck I couldn't turn away from but wasn't 100% enjoying what I was watching. But its a talented bunch, some of which have already moved on to bigger and better things. Look for Sonya Walger in the much anticipated Flash Forward on ABC this fall.

Are you watching the new HBO show Tell Me You Love Me? I've watched the first three episodes and I find it relatively interesting, but I am in no way committed to sticking around just yet. I could be easily swayed by something in episode 4 to just ditch the series all together. Anyone else? I mean, for instance, Grey's Anatomy has annoyed the heck out of me for the last season or so, but I am faithfully watching it each and every Thursday at 9 p.m. because I am already committed to watching it. Now maybe you're thinking, well that show is established and been on for several seasons now. But that's not it. I just watched Dirty Sexy Money last night and I will definitely be sticking around for that ride. Period. I already know it. I don't have that with Tell Me You Love Me and I'm not sure it's going to come.

There are basically 6 main characters, who play the 3 couples, and then there is the therapist (Jane Alexander) that the couples have in common. With the exception of the much talked about graphic sex in the show, too much of each show is depressing, and even some of the sex is depressing because most of it isn't remotely sexy as you might assume. I'm all for a realistic show, but they may take it a step too far. Audiences want realistic but watchable. You may get depressed just by watching Tell Me You Love Me. This show might be too much of a reminder of your own life and not enough of an escape. One of the most likeable characters on the show is Palek (Adam Scott) and he is married to Carolyn (Sonya Walger), who is an extremely unhappy woman who at this point appears to just be a bitch. She is completely unlikeable and she punishes Palek for things that are out of his control. Although I assume I am supposed to feel some sort of sympathy for her because she has been unable to conceive a baby for over a year, her attitude is so unlikeable, I feel nothing but dislike for her. I'm still looking for that redeeming quality she must have for Palek to have married her in the first place. Then there's Jamie (Michelle Borth). I don't hate Jamie, but this girl is some kind of annoying. Whining, complaining, whining, complaining, whining... you get the picture. I could go on and on, but literally, that's all the girl does. I think her character may be interesting when paired with her maybe-fiance Hugo (Luke Kirby), but only if she can not appear so desperate and whiny all the time. Is the character realistic? Definitely, but that doesn't mean I would even remotely want to watch that and can't exactly call something as annoying as her entertaining.

I think this one might be too real. Its got something there, but it doesn't get me excited about watching it.

Am I The Only One Not on The Closer Bandwagon?

From the Archives: This one is from August 2007. I still don't watch The Closer and still don't know what the fuss is all about. I did try it again, maybe a month ago. Groundbreaking and moving it was not. I'll stick to my other shows instead. Too bad. I do love Kyra.

What is with everyone loving The Closer? I just don't get it. I thought I would like the show, I am a fan of Kyra Sedgwick and I love Dr. Emil Skoda (I hope you get this reference, but just in case, Dr. Skoda is the name of JK Simmons longtime character on Law & Order). I watched it for the first few episodes when it premiered a couple of years ago. I wanted to like it. I really did, but it wasn't happening and from what I can tell, not much has changed since I last watched.

So, what's my problem with this show? Several things. First let me say, terrible title for a show. I mean, I've heard it pronounced both ways, which is never good, and besides that, it just isn't the right title for this. We are talking about people here, you "close" a deal, you don't "close" a person, it's insensitive to term it that way and sort of inhumane. And I don't really see it as "closing a case".

My biggest problem is I think I find the show a bit insulting to women and what many probably view as quirky, I view as unnecessary and sorta demeaning more than anything else. Now, I think many won't understand my point of view here simply by virtue of there being a female lead who is shown to be the most skillful in his job and in her department. I guess I think this just masks what I find insulting, it doesn't excuse it and in many ways allows it to happen. Would they have her character with these tendencies without her being the lead? Probably not because then it would stick out as more demeaning to women.

So, what's insulting? Like I said, I'm sure people will think of it as quirky. Her tendency to starve herself and then almost binge eat is cringe-worthy and not a good message to women and her need to be fashionable and buying habits are very stereotypical. Also, don't think that a female detective such as Kyra's character Brenda Johnson would realistically wear dresses around the precinct, at the crime scene, or interview witnesses. This isn't the 1950s, women are allowed to wear pants and most do, especially when it is literally at odds with functioning in your occupation. These may sound like small things, but they aren't as much so since she's in just about every scene, it became quite annoying.

I also think the supporting characters on here are pretty weak and them not appreciating a female detective is a pretty old storyline that doesn't bear repeating. I mean, you don't see them playing that up with Olivia (Mariska Hargitay) on Law & Order: SVU because it's been done and detracts from what is happening on the show. So, I could do without that. Now, obviously I don't consider JK Simmons a weak supporting character, and the interaction between Kyra and JK was one of my favorite parts of the show, they have a great dynamic. I also liked Jon Tenney's character. It's not that the acting is bad by the rest of the cast, but I also wouldn't call it a strength on the show.

So, are people loving this show more because they get to see Kyra in action more than loving the entire show by itself? I definitely think this is possible since the show has been critically acclaimed to a large extent and has received many awards and nominations, but they are almost all for Kyra, not for the show itself.

High School Musical - What's All the Fuss About?

From the Archives: I just think this is funny. I definitely still think this about High School Musial but like a hundred million kids love it to distraction and parents are willing to take them to it, so, I won't complain too much. Kids could instead be watching trash on MTV or VH1 and growing up entirely too soon in the process.

Overacting.

Lipsyncing.

Heaven help us, overacting while lipsyncing.

This was what ruined what should have been and could have been a very adorable movie.

So, I finally saw High School Musical and I am not mad I waited, since it didn't even come close to living up to its hype. My guess is that this movie is good compared to the offerings of late for kids, preteens, and teens. Which is just sad. Whatever happened to the plethora of kid and teen friendly movies that used to come out and that our parents were forced to take us to and had to later admit were just plain old fun. I'm talking about the PG and PG-13 movies that were littered throughout the 80s and early 90s. Its a shame that movies have become so lacking that High School Musical is viewed as the second coming by comparison.

Straight From the Archives

I'm attempting to revive my blog and be more committed (I know, it seems like I say that once a year, but I'm trying). I do like doing it but life gets in the way sometimes. As does my laziness (the big culprit!). I am noticing a ton of old posts that for whatever reason I just never got around to publishing. I know for some, I wrote them say, the day or or the day after a show aired and then thought "I'll come back, edit it, and then publish it." Fast forward a month or even a week and its not as relevant anymore. But I really like some of those posts, so I'm going to just publish several of them, a sort of "From the Archives" series. And since they really do go back a ways (yes, back in yesteryear, 2007:)), we'll be able to see if my opinions have changed much. There's even a few from now canceled series. I will add a little blurb on the top of a few of them to explain when I wrote the particular posts. I do know that a few of the ones I wrote about were Gossip Girl (possibly my favorite one and that I still agree with), but also from Big Shots, ER, and a few other shows, most of which are now off the air but remembered fondly including a little known show called Tell Me You Love Me.

After I finish with these few from my archives, I'll be back writing about stuff that is currently airing.
